Children are supposed to be the future, and the key word in the previous sentence, is “supposed”. You see, children are the best imitators, and they have no other choice but to imitate the adults they are surrounded by.
Romeo was an unlucky dog. He was unlucky because he lived on the streets, which made him vulnerable. He was unlucky because he happened to cross paths with the kind of children you wish didn’t represent the future of a nation. He was unlucky because evil parents who raised evil children happened to live in the same neighborhood where he did.
They tortured him before the eyes of an entire community that simply did nothing
Romeo has found with embedded wire in his neck. And children used this embedded wire to drag him around and torture him, before the eyes of an entire community that simply did nothing. Because in Greece, nothing is anyone’s business, especially when it comes to animals. So Romeo was also unlucky because he lived in a country where choose to turn a blind eye, and carry on with their petty, little lives as if nothing happens.

Due to the severity of him injuries, Romeo has lost his voice and has had serious problems with his trachea and esophagus. Today he is almost completely healed and he is in the foster care of one of the best. Linda, his foster mum, has been doing everything she can to heal this boy’s body and soul, who despite everything he has been through, he is still an affectionate, loving dog, that trust humans… Imagine that…

In a country where people’s compassion for animals is limited to a “none of my business” type of attitude, atrocities like this one are too common. It’s not the first time a dog has been abuse by children, and it won’t be the last.

What is wrong with Greek people?
Often, people wonder why there is so much cruelty towards animals in Greece. What is wrong with Greek people? Well, nothing is wrong with Greek people really. There are some sick individuals among us, just like there are in every society. The problem is that strays are too many here, which makes the sick ones have easy access to easy victims.
Animal cruelty is accepted
And another problem is the impunity. For all I know, those kids are somewhere out there right now, torturing another dog or cat. Their behavior is accepted. By the society, by the police, by the state. By everyone. Animal cruelty is accepted. The Greek society has yet to make the connection between cruelty to animals and cruelty in general. The man next door who chains his dog in the back of his truck and drags him around is not a potential future abuser, child molester, murderer. He is not considered a danger to society, he is just a danger to dogs. And who cares about dogs.

Anyway. This post is longer than I meant it to be. Romeo is safe, healthy and ready for his forever home. If you wish to make a small donation to his foster mum, you can do so through her PayPal or her Youcaring page. Thanks for reading this one (really, thanks)
