A week ago, SPAZ – the local charity of Glyfada, in Athens Greece, received a call about a matted, sick Poddle that had found shelter in the garage of a building near the local mountain if Imittos.
The dog was collected immediately and was taken to the vet who didn’t know where to begin.. He is one of the worst cases of neglect we had ever see. He is sick – he suffers from an advanced state of leishmaniasis, that has blinded him and left him with ulcers and a very low hematocrit. He is emaciated and so weakened that he can barely stand on his feet. The smell coming form his 4-kilo tiny body was horrific, and while he was being groomed, we realized that it came from his ears, that hadn’t been cleaned for months. A black, greasy stuff was removed from both his ears, that smelled like manure and had almost deafened him.
The most heartbreaking thing of all is that Sakis (as the charity called him) endured the shaving, the cleaning, the bathing, and everything that was done to him with the patience and the elegance of a typical Poodle in a dog show. He is in so much pain that we don’t even know where to touch him, he is so weakened that his legs go numb sometimes and he falls, and he is so gentle that he makes our hearts melt.
He has a long way to go, but we believe in that little baby. If you wish to donate, you can use the charity’s PayPal: firstname.lastname@example.org. Follow his progress on the SPAZ Facebook page here.
