New life for our rescue dogs is all we fight for. New life, new family and a new beginning. For Combo, all these things came true, and we are more than happy.
A tiny, sad creature, matted and miserable
Combo was spotted by a woman, in a suburb of Athens, Greece. A tiny, sad creature, matted and miserable, begging for food and feeding of molded breads and anything he could fin on the streets. The Save a Greek Stray was contacted and Combo was removed from there and taken to the organization’s shelter.
Two stitches, right where his microchip used to be
Combo’s condition was devastating. I have been in rescue for a few years now, I have seen everything there is to see and I never cry anymore. Coming back home that day, I couldn’t hold back my tears. Underneath the matted hair, dozens of ticks were eating him alive. His tiny body was an open wound and what we discovered while shaving the back of his neck was just too much to handle. Two stitches, right where his microchip used to be. They had removed it before abandoning him and leaving him to survive on his own, on the streets where most dogs are double his size. Apart from that, Combo suffered from ehrichia, leishmanisis and mange.
Combo received the treatment and the love he had never received before in his life, and he recovered, physically and mentally
Combo’s blood tests were heartbreaking. Leishmaniasis, if left untreated for too long, can result in the dog’s death. The disease destroys the dog’s immunity system and makes its internal organs to malfunction – mainly the kidneys and the liver.
Combo received the treatment and the love he had never received before in his life, and he recovered, physically and mentally. He transformed from the sad, scared and confused creature he was to a happy, social and loving dog. He was just too easy to love and made us all laugh, every time we wandered around the shelter, all proud and happy.
But his new mum didn’t. Combo was adopted in Greece about a month ago, and his new family simply adores him.
Combo stayed at the shelter for a few months. Even though he was adorable and more adoptable than the average rescue, he did not get as many adoption requests as we thought he would. You see, people are reluctant to adopt a dog that has been so sick, and fear being caught up in medical bills and constant visits to the vet. But his new mum didn’t. Combo was adopted in Greece about a month ago, and his new family simply adores him. His new life has nothing to do with the past and Combo will be a happy sweetheart from now on.
