Rescue can be so amazing sometimes, that even we don’t believe the stories we witness every day. Rico’s and Rafiq’s story is one of those that put a huge smile on our faces, and their happiness keeps helping us move forward every day.
Found in a water drain, feeding off the garbage
Rico, Rafiq and their two female siblings were abandoned on the mountain when they were about one and a half month old. Found in a water drain, feeding off the garbage in the middle of nowhere, all four of them were rescued by ZEIL and taken to the charity’s small shelter.
The two female ones were adopted quite fast, and left for their forever homes, leaving Rico and Rafiq behind for two long years.

Life at the shelter
Rico and Rafiq were always introvert and loners. Very kind and polite to dogs and people, they wandered around the shelter together, never interfering in anything, never making their presence too obvious, never causing any problems.
They had formed a very close bond, they would always hang out together and follow each other around – wherever Rafiq went Rico would go too. They followed each other around anywhere and loved each other so much, that it was simply too difficult for one to function without the other.

They also looked alike so much, that for the first couple of months that I volunteered there, I could barely tell them apart.
Rico and Rafiq were separated for the first time when Rafiq was adopted and left for his forever home in Denmark. But it seems like separation was not something they could cope with. A few days after his adoption, Rafiq jumped the fence and escaped. His family did everything they could to get him back – a huge operation was set in Denmark, with volunteers, family, friends and the Danish police looking for him 24/7.

Rafiq was lost in a country he didn’t know, roaming around in an area he was unfamiliar with, and that was more than scary. For us back in Greece, it was as if Rafiq was looking for Rico. So the best thing we could do, was help them meet again.

Rico travelled for Denmark a few days later, with one of our volunteers. Together – and with the help of the search team – they started looking for Rafiq, walking and calling him night and day. A couple of days later, in an area about 10klm from home, as they were walking calling for him, a shadow appeared out of nowhere, stopped at looked at them. The volunteer, holding Rico, called Rafiq’s name and he just went to them.

the two brothers will be spending their entire lives together, like they always wanted
Rafiq was back home safe, but the special bond the two brothers shared made the family realize that they could not live separately. Rico was also adopted, and the two brothers will be spending their entire lives together, like they always wanted.
They share their new home with another female Greek rescue dog, and they even have their own Facebook page, where you can follow their daily life and adventures.
