Rescue Of A Giant Who Didn’t Know He Was Asking For Help

Rescue comes in many forms, from having a dog jumping into your car and rescuing himself, using you as a means to an end, to chasing dogs that don’t realize they need help, having them sedated, caught in traps and literally dragging them to the rescue.

In this giant baby’s case, the rescue was something in-between. He was spotted by E. in a gas station on the highway, about 65 kilometers from Athens, Greece. A calm, silent giant, looking at you with those huge, green eyes, but not approaching, thin, neglected and with a dermatological disease that made him scratch unstoppably.

Waiting

She fell in love, photographed him and went back to Athens leaving her heart there next to him, with a promise to be back soon. And she did. And I went with her. Last night, we spent hours in that gas station, trying to help that giant who was asking for help, but at the same time refused to let us help him.

and waiting

I stayed in the car, and E. sat down for hours, trying to make him come closer and closer. For every step forward, he made two steps backwards, and then forward again, and so on and so on, for hours. I lost hope after all that back and forth, and tried to convince her that we should leave, and come back the next day with a sedative. But when an animal is stuck in your mind like that, you can’t give up.

So E. didn’t give up. She tried again and again and again, until she finally managed to catch him. And despite my advice not to pressure him, because a fearful dog can easily bite, she insisted that he wouldn’t. And he didn’t.

Finally in the car, on the way “home”

After that everything was a piece of cake, because the giant is one of the most submissive and kind animals I have ever met. He slept in the car on the way home, he slept at E.’s home, and he slept this afternoon on the vet’s examination table.

Today, on the examination table (look at that paw!!)

All the time, while he was being punctured by needles, scrubbed for biopsies, shaved and moved around by strangers, he remained silent, gentle, with his huge green eyes looking at us with an unusual serenity, and his huge doggy heart trusting – trusting us, three strangers he had never met before.

I fell in love with this boy, but most of all I fell in love with this girl’s dedication and strong will. She went to that gas station yesterday with one purpose, and no matter how impossible it seemed, she managed to make that night the first one of the giant’s new life.

“Got some good news for me doc?”

The big boy was a SCARS rescue. You can donate to the charity via PayPal (donate@scars.gr). For updates on the giant, who doesn’t have a name yet, you can follow the SCARS Facebook page here.
