Stray dogs in Greece – and all around the world I guess – become familiar with the worst of humanity, and some of them, if they are lucky, with its best. Joker is one of those dogs who have experienced both.
He used to be a stray, one of the many strays living in the town of Nafpactos – one of Greece’s most beautiful cities, and one of the ugliest when it comes to animal welfare.
Strays in Nafpactos are expendable. The ones you meet on the street the one day, will probably not be there the next. Poisoned, shot, drown and hang is how most on them end up, unless they are rescued in time.
So one day, Joker was shot in the head, for no obvious reason I guess. He was shot simply for being there. He was shot for the same reason dogs like him are poisoned, drown and killed every day. Because humans are evil, and in some parts of the world, they are as evil as it gets.
When he was found and rescued by volunteers of the local charity, his injuries were not fresh, and this basically means that before he was seen by the right people, he has already been seen by many others, bleeding on the street, with his jaw hanging, surviving God knows how.
He had been shot from close range. The bullet left a huge hole on the side of his mouth, it blinded him from one eye and even broke part of his back. Apart from the surgeries he had to undergo, Joker also had to recover from the infection that could prove lethal, since he was not rescued on time.
After a long and painful recovery, Joker came out a winner. And he did not just survive, he thrived. He was adopted in Germany by Ell Wyatt, a Greek artist living in Germany. He was the one and only person who asked to adopt him and he did.
Joker’s life following his adoption is not for me to describe, I don’t have the words, nor the talent. The photos say is all. Those two match, they just look too good together, like they always belonged to each other.
