Abandoned in the middle of nowhere, in the middle of a busy highway somewhere in rural Greece, Mel (in Greek we called him Melios) was spotted and rescued by volunteers. When he was first brought in he looked so fragile, that we almost did not know how to treat him. Continue reading Abandoned Mangy Puppy Finds His Forever Home After One Year
Blind rescue kittens are like mangy starving dogs in Greece – you can never rescue too many, you can never rescue them all. Respiratory and eye infections are so common in stray cats, that every time we rescue a healthy seeing kitten we almost can’t believe it. Virgil, Blinkin and Destiny were rescued in late May 2016 by SCARS and were fostered together by a volunteer. All three with severe eye infections that had cost them their vision – but not much else. Some rescue stories get their happy end once the dogs are healed and recovered, and some others have a long way to go before they reach a happy end. Before – after can be awe-inspiring and amazing, but sometimes, behind the incredible photos and the “I can’t believe it’s the same dog photos” there’s a lot more than just the rescue dog’s appearance that needed time and effort improve. Continue reading Stray Puppy Recovered From Mange Still Has A Long Way To Go
I admit I made the video when angry, but I always like to think positive, and after publishing it and watching it again and again, I felt like I needed to be clear about what “just a dog” has done for me so far. Because it’s not just about the big things, but also about the little things. I never met a guide dog or a water rescuer, I never fostered a dog that can sense my blood sugar levels or lead a search party for a missing person. I have only adopted, fostered and met simple pet dogs, and they can do a lot. So here’s what “just a dog” has done for me: Continue reading Just A Dog And What It Can Just Do
Before I begin, I should probably say that it all sounded a lot better in my head – I was one of those students who kept failing every single composition test anyway – but I’ll give it a try. Just this morning, I was answering some recent comments in my latest rescue video in Youtube and happened to notice that one of the suggested videos on the side was titled “Things to know before getting a puppy”, or something like that. It was a vlog and I realized that I know the girl – millions of people do. She is one of the youngest and most successful bloggers ever and her Youtube channel has more than ten million subscribers. For this article I’m gonna call her ” Abby”. Continue reading Youtube Vloggers – How Can Dog Adoption Go Mainstream?
If you had the option of sharing the two photos in the header image separately, which one would you choose? 99% of the people, including me, would choose the one on the left, Petra. Now how is that a problem in dog rescue and what is this article about? Well, here’s the thing: about a month ago, Petra’s rescue story was shared by an Australian media page, and as usual, I read all 576 comments below. Among all the “God bless you” and the “I can’t believe it’s the same dog” there was one comment that has been on my mind since then, and for which I did not have a quick answer – in a way I still don’t. Continue reading Dog Rescue And Best Selling Stories – How Awesome Can Average Be?
It was after midnight back in July 2014. I was volunteering in Ilioupolis animal Welfare Union back then, and that night we were chatting with some fellow volunteers when one of them posted about a German Shepherd just abandoned up on the mountain. According to the guard working the night shift in the municipality’s garage, a car appeared out of nowhere, dropped off a neglected dog and just left. The guard called a volunteer and she notified the rest of us. Continue reading Neglected Dog Abandoned On A Mountain Finds Her Dream Home
Lazy rescue dog is just a title. A well deserved title when it comes to Mrs T. The video also depicts 100% what you’ll get if you adopt Mrs T But still it’s not enough. The last couple of posts were a bit sad, and since I’m a positive person and there’s even a category in the blog named: “Funniest rescue Pets”, I really need to share with you my experience with this particular dog. Continue reading Lazy Rescue Dog Simply Won’t Get Up. Never
Dog adoption. It sounds nice, but for most of us it’s a headache. Choosing the right family is one big challenge and we face it every day. Many people didn’t really like this video. I’m guessing they were offended, so I think I should make some things clear. First of all, we almost never talk to people this way – at least I don’t. Do we have these thoughts? Yes we do. But if things are going to change some day, we are the ones who need to help the public see things in a different perspective, so we try our best to be polite. Continue reading Dog Adoption And Common Misundersandings
All of us were introduced to the animal welfare world in different ways. I, for example, had no idea about what was really going on. One day I found an abandoned dog right outside my house, took him home and the rest came pretty easy. I never had to worry about what my first step would be, what I should do or how I should handle it. I posted his photo on the facebook page of the charity in my area, and the next day he was vaccinated and scheduled to be checked out and then neutered.
