Dog rescue comes in all forms and, in Greece, heartbreaking stories keep competing against one another every day. I am not sure what was it that made Petra’s story go viral. We rescue dogs like her every day, so it is not because she was found is such terrible condition. So maybe it was those breathtaking first photos of hers, maybe it was the video, or maybe it was that she is simply too special. Dog rescue in Greece is full of stories like this one. Those living dead, most of them found and rescued “by accident”, because the disease has made them hide in places you never imagined. Continue reading Dog Found Almost Dead Is Getting Better And Better Every Day

Miserable, sad and neglected, Greece’s hunting dogs are an open, bleeding would in Animal Welfare. Shelters are packed with emaciated and sick hounds. Many of them live a life of misery and are being abandoned per hundreds every year.
Emaciated, sick, and desperate dogs are wondering almost every street of rural Greece. They are the ghosts that nobody cares about, and that everyone pretends they are not there. They just roam around, and the sicker they get, the more rejected they are. Eventually, after they are left untreated for too long, they end up looking like Mahi. And there is no place for dogs like Mahi in city centers or villages. If they survive poisoning, the more gruesome they are to look at, the more they are driven away, because people simply don’t want to look at them. Starved, sick -very sick actually, partially blind and abandoned, Spirit was rescued literally at the last minute. He was spotted by a woman near one of Athens’ richest areas, Glyfada, who posted two photos of him on Facebook, begging for help. According to her, the dog’s owner’s kept him tied 24/7, until they left for their summer vacation, and decided to let him loose. Their future plans were to put him to sleep, once they got back, so that “he wouldn’t suffer”. Continue reading Starved And Sick Pit Bull Rescued Too Late
Rescuers have seen almost everything in Greece, so nothing can surprise us anymore. There was something off about Oscar since day one, but then again, there was nothing wrong with him either. He was rescued from the streets of Greece by Save a Greek Stray in April 2016. Only one year old, he had to survive among a pack of stray dogs that would constantly bully and terrorize him. He arrived at the shelter very sick – leishmaniasis, mange, ehrichia, you name it. Continue reading Rescuers Discover Something Amazing About This Rescue Dog

It was after midnight back in July 2014. I was volunteering in Ilioupolis animal Welfare Union back then, and that night we were chatting with some fellow volunteers when one of them posted about a German Shepherd just abandoned up on the mountain. According to the guard working the night shift in the municipality’s garage, a car appeared out of nowhere, dropped off a neglected dog and just left. The guard called a volunteer and she notified the rest of us. Continue reading Neglected Dog Abandoned On A Mountain Finds Her Dream Home
My gorgeous is the first dog I adopted. The first dog I ever had. She came to me looking really bad, with that horrible cherry eye sticking out and not knowing much about anything. She was two and a half years old and had spent her entire life in a kennel. So she had to learn everything from the beginning. How to walk on a leash, how to socialize and how to get used to the human presence in the house.
