This is Kiara and she was rescued two years ago from a small village near Karditsa, Greece, when she was about five years old.
Kiara was wandering the streets, starving. She was literally skin and bones, and pregnant, looking for food on the streets, dragging her broken leg. Can you imagine the desperation?
Imagine being pregnant, imagine not having eaten in days, imagine the pain in your leg, as you are trying to survive with broken bones and broken spirit. Imagine being ignored. By everyone. Nobody helped Kiara. Nobody ever helps these dogs here. All they get is doors slammed in their faces, and leftovers from the garbage. That’s it.
A woman inform the local charity and Kiara was rescued. Apart from her broken leg, she was healthy. She was operated, she recovered, she learned to walk on a leash and she became a sweet, loving dog.
And then the weeks went by, and the months, and the years. Kiara’s photo album kept being updated, with new photos and new information. Kiara was five and a half years old, then she was six, the six and a half, then seven.
Some dogs are just unlucky, and I don’t know why. Kiara hasn’t found a home yet, and the reason are plenty. Maybe it’s because she is not that young. Maybe it’s because she is not that pretty. Maybe it’s because she still limps. Maybe because she needs time to trust new people, before she becomes the gentle, loving dog that the volunteers know.
Or maybe it’s because her forever family doesn’t know she is out there. Maybe they are looking for her, but haven’t found her. Maybe when they do, we’ll realize that this is why she has been waiting all those years.
