Hundreds Of Rescued Dogs In Shelter Get Special Treatment For The First Time In Their Lives

The DASH (Dream of A Safe Heaven) dog shelter is based in Kalamata, southern Greece. It was built by volunteers, it is being run by volunteers and it is based on donations alone, like all shelters in Greece.

With limited resources, no help from the government or the local authorities, and in an area of Greece notorious for horrific cases of animal abuse and neglect, DASH is exactly what its initials stand for: a heaven for some of the most unwanted and overlooked dogs.

I could go on and on about the shelter, but no matter what I say, I will not do it any justice. There is something about it that is addictive, that makes you love it and fight for it and devote your time and effort to it. The fact that so many young people from all over the world volunteer there says a lot. It is hard work, but at the same time it is very fulfilling and rewarding.

Katerina is not just the founder of the shelter, she is its soul, its flesh and bones, and she has devoted her entire life to those animals, who have suffered abuse, neglect and starvation, and have seen the worst of us humans. The shelter is against kennels, do the dogs live free, in big groups (packs). They are happy in their temporary home, but they all deserve a forever home, and this is the shelters main goal.

The “groomathon” took place the last weekend of June, 2018. Professional groomers from the UK, and from Athens, Greece, devoted unbelievable hours for two day in a row, grooming, bathing, shaving, and caring for those dogs, and three of them adopted dogs from the shelter.
