My dog Pela never really liked cats. She has tolerated them at home before, but generally she is not a cat lover, and that’s obvious
In Greece there are millions of stray cats, no one knows how many exactly, because the numbers always vary.
So walking around with your dog, you are more than likely to bump into a stray cat, or ten. Some dogs ignore them, some bark at them, some try to chase them. But no matter what, pet dogs that are walked regularly basically walk among stray cats.
Pela is the typo of dog that gets very annoyed with cats in general. She looks for them, she barks at them and she tried to chase then (unsuccessfuly, since she usually walks on a leash). Oh yeah, she also tried desperately to steal the food people leave around for stray cats.
When I brought my two rescued kittens at home, I wasn’t sure how she would react. But Sunny and Pamuk were babies, they smelled of milk and babyhood, so Pela, as is very common in dogs, went into a cleaning spree, licking them non stop for about a month.
The kittens are now about three months old. They don’t have that irresistible smell anymore, and Pela has lost interest in keeping them clean. She doesn’t chase them around however, like she does with the strays quite the contrary.
Since the kittens grew up with her, they see her as a mother maybe, as someone to trust and to cuddle up against. Especially Pamuk is in love with her I think.
She seeks Pela’s presence, spends time with her in bed, and they usually end up sleeping together. Right now, there are three dogs and two cats in the house. Of the two cats, it’s only Pamuk the one who seeks the presence of the dogs, and of the two cats, it’s only Pela who will let a cat sleep on her bed, cuddling up next to her.
She still hates every single cat she seen on the street of course. This doesn’t change. But she loved her Pamuk, and Pamuk loves her back. So I just sit around and watch them. How cute are they? Eh??
You can watch the kittens being “raised” by my dogs here.
Animals too can transcend instinct given the chance, or certain circumstances. You can see how secure Pamuk feels, the way she stretches almost on her back right next to Pela.
