Stray means unprotected, vulnerable and alone. Strays here are on death row, living on borrowed time. They are shot, poisoned, ran over and mistreated all the time.
It’s as if “man’s best friend” doesn’t really apply here. Most people, instead of realizing that they belong with us, just see them as outsiders, as if it’s us against them. How unfair is that? Of all the animals on earth, dogs are the only species whose natural habitat is the human society, and yet they are treated as if they don’t belong here.
Jack was living as a stray in a busy area in the town of Karditsa, near the train station. For nine years he lived there, and it was not the only time his life was in danger. In the past, he was found with a broken jaw, and various injuries.
He is old now. And they older they get, the more vulnerable they are. On August 7th, 2018, Jack was shot in the head in the neighborhood he called home for nine years. No one knows who shot him, or no one comes forward – they never do.
Jack survived, with his body full of bullets and nearly blinded. He was taken in by the local charity, and the volunteers are doing everything they can to help him recover. He is not going back to the streets again, so he is looking for a forever home. A home where he will forgive and forget, and spend his final years catching up on the life he missed out on.
