All over Greece there are thousands of puppies being abandoned every single day. Litters that come from not spayed “pet dogs”, usually in rural areas, where the usual way of population control getting rid of the puppies.
This is how puppies like him survive here, feeding off corpses, paper packages, garbage. Rural greece is full of little babies like this one, thrown out in the big world they know nothing about, alone, figuring out ways to quench their thirst and to satisfy their hunger.
I won’t be boring you with unnecessary words this time, mainly because I don’t want to spoil the cuteness. I met those seven yesterday, filmed them photographed them, had my puppy therapy of the month and I figured I should share it.
Everything I say and everything I write about Mentee will never be enough. He broke my heart the first time I saw him, as he was sitting there, just rescued from the streets, with his beautiful huge eyes looking around, not knowing what to do, and how to behave. Not knowing how to be happy, how to be a puppy.
This three month old puppy was rescued in Kefalonia, in Greece. One of the most touristic islands of the country, advertised as a paradise I am sure by touristic agencies around the world, for its crystal clear waters and its green mountains and its expensive resorts.
Stray dogs and cats in Greece have seen it all. If someone wanted to put together a scale with all the shades of human nature, all they’d need would be stray stories, and nothing else.
I’m guessing (I’m hoping anyway) that thee must be places in the world where stories like this one are not an everyday thing, and where once in a while, some sick individual abandons a puppy, or a litter of puppies and the story makes headlines.
Five months. That’s how long it survived in this world. It was born in the wrong place at the wrong time, lived among the wrong people, experienced rejection, fear and starvation and ended up being shot and killed.
“Ugly” is not really a word that can describe any puppy. Regardless of their appearance, puppies are the cutest little things in the world, right? Meh… It’s complicated.
“Fall seven times, stand up eight” – this is what rescue is. Every time you stand up, every time you feel strong enough, every time you see hope in the end of the tunnel, something like this comes along and knocks you down again.
